Also, keep your file system type choices simple. That's why you have a shared partition they both can use. I'd advise against making Mint's root partition automount under Gentoo or Gentoo's root partition automount under Mint. This puts Mint in the driver's seat when it comes to managing your boot partition and Mint is far more reliable and easier in general than Gentoo.
